What’s up my New Breed MLM’ers? Welcome back to Episode 8. Today, we’re gonna have a chat about why we should be using a Network Marketing planner. There’s all sorts of them out there, seems like a pretty basic topic, but this is a really, really important thing, and we’ll get into why. But as for the planners themselves, there’s paper ones, you can get an industry specific MLM planner, there’s digital products, which is best? Let’s talk about it.
Whether you’re brand new to network marketing and direct sales or if you’ve been at it for a while, you’re most likely checking this out because you realise that there is a very big importance to organising your business. Even from the very beginning you can quickly get overwhelmed by trying to keep track of names, products, appointments, scripts, team members, mentors numbers, events to host, passwords, follow-ups, on and on goes the list. It can be insane, and it can really, really mess you up. It’s easy to forget things, or to fall so far behind that it gets out of hand and you really feel defeated.
As a busy entrepreneur we don’t have time for multiple calendars and we don’t want stuff in multiple places. If you’re like me, you all want it in one place. The best network marketers and direct sellers know that a large part of their success lies in all the prep work that they do. They know it’s important to use tools to make things easier, so they can work more efficiently. When you’ve planned out your activity, you can completely focus on that stuff, you don’t have to worry about missing things, you don’t have to worry about anything else other than the task at hand, and what you’re trying to achieve right then, right there.
A planner is a tool that’s made for helping you plan, that’s it. But the value of a planner is huge. Believe it or not, choosing a planner can be a tough decision though. A lot of people struggle with it, and it needs to fit into your business, and your life. It has to work for you. So with saying that, there isn’t one option that suits everyone. This is a really flexible thing, so we can talk about that, and you can hopefully pick something out that works best for you. There’s a ton of books, apps, tools, programs, all different stuff, for task management and organisation, so which is the best planner for network marketing? Like I said, it all comes down to personal preference.A lot of reps feel like they need a very specific planner, or a planner software that’s dedicated to their industry. That might be easier in some ways, but I don’t know if it’s necessary. Entrepreneurship principles are transferable across all industries. Time management and planning are great examples of this, because you can use them pretty much anywhere.
So is it better to get something that’s pre-made for the industry? It might be easier.
The short answer to this is maybe.
I personally think it’s worth the small investment of time to figure out what you’ll need to track and create your own system. Something personal to you. You’re upline can likely help you with things because they know what’s necessary for your business, they’ve kind of gone through it, and they know what you might need in there. So once you’ve talked to your leadership, you can create the ultimate system specifically for you.
Some Of The Things You’ll Need In Your Network Marketing Daily Planner
A Scheduling / Calendar Section
You’re going to need a booking component. Basically a calendar, so you can stay on top of who you need to be talking to and when.
A Follow-Up Section
This fits in with your calendar so you never forget to follow up with someone. But it’s important yo have a way to distinguish these are follow ups.
A Prospect List Section
You need to be able to keep track of everyone that you’re looking to prospect or show your opportunity to.
A Goal Section
This is where you can put your business plan, and all of your goals.
A Section For Notes
You can put in checklists or anything like that which just doesn’t have a category.
A Mileage Section
This is if you’re doing a lot of travelling with your business. If so, you’re going to need to track your gas and your mileage so you’d put it in here.
If you’re much more heavily focused on products like with a direct sales biz, then you’re likely going to need to keep track of your inventory and your customer base. So you’re going to need sections for that. You’re also going to need to track host rewards, order dates, all that good stuff.
If that sounds like something you’re regularly trying to juggle, you’re definitely going to want to get your hands on a planner of some sort. Maybe in this case there will be a benefit for an industry based Direct Sales planner.
The bottom line is I don’t feel there is any best MLM planner as it’s not about what planner you’re using, but more about whether you actually use it. So the planner by itself, it’s not going to do something that magical for your business. It’s up to you. You have to make it happen, and you have to like using it. If it’s pure agony every time you have to get in there to do something with it then it’s not going to work.
It also depends on type of person you are. If you need a lot of structure, then you’re going to want something that’s maybe categorised already for you. If you don’t like having those constraints put on you, then maybe something like an empty notebook or a basic app. When I was first deciding which way I wanted to go, I broke things down into two categories:
These are just paper copies. There’s a ton of these available both in store and online. There’s plain generic planners, there’s cool versions with colors and graphics on them, there’s generic general entrepreneurial-based versions, and there’s specific network marketing and direct sales versions.
So you have some choices to make there.
The digital side of things
Nowadays, people prefer to work from computers and mobile devices a lot more, and that’s me. So due to this there’s a ton of planner programs and apps out there, and they range from simple to really, really complex.
A well known one for direct sales is the biz runner app.
There’s also powerful general planning software, things like Todoist and Trello.
Trello I already knew existed, but recently I had a fellow network marketer that was explaining how she uses Trello and it was pretty amazing. It can really do a lot.
If you want a more comprehensive list of stuff that’s out there just do a simple Google search and you can also go into your App Store and you can do search there. It’s gonna give you all sorts of options and the cool thing is you’re gonna get a lot of reviews as well.
This way you can figure out what might work best for you. Personally, I like to work on the digital side of things. I like to use very simple things and what I found work best for me is using something like colour note to take my notes, and make my lists, then I combine it with my Google Calendar for scheduling things. I also really love the ability to talk to my Google Assistant by voice. I can schedule things in my calendar, set reminders, it’s pretty amazing. For me, that’s what works.
There’s no right or wrong way of doing this. It’s just really important to use something that works for you.
So that we’ve spoken about the planners themselves. Let’s talk about:
Ways To Use An MLM Planner To Be A Better Entrepreneur
Here are some tips:
1. Right everything down.
I mean everything. You’re much more likely to remember things that you actually write out. So take the time each day.
Write all your points down, your tasks, every single little thing. I don’t know if you’ve ever had this happen but, sometimes you think of something you think this is really important and you think “I won’t forget it. This is something that’s really, really important, there’s no way I could ever forget this.” So you don’t write it down. And then guess what? Later on that day, or the next day, or a week later you’re struggling to remember what it was, and you get all flustered because you know what was important.
Anything that comes into your mind, put it down, categorize it.
If you want to take things a step further, then plan your new things out.
You can take a few minutes right before bed to plan out your next day, and every Sunday before you start your week, you can plan out your week.
There’s a lot to be said about pre-planning.
2. Make sure your calendar section can support notes
It’s awesome that you can see what’s going on during the run of the day but you need to have a system in place for taking notes, extra tasks, etc.
It can be anything that works for you. Something where you can put extra things in there. There’s a lot going on, so with the proper setup you can put these extra things in and stay on task.
3. Create monthly goals
So we’re planning things out on a daily basis, and sometimes we’re looking out to a month, but you should have a goal. Something that you are working towards. Something day by day. We talked about goal setting, and we know why its so important, so this is where the rubber meets the road and we want to put it in there.
Successful entrepreneurs set goals and then they take actions to reach them. At the end of the month, look forward to what you want to do in the next month and write it in the planner.
There was a study that was done by the Dominican University of California and it proved writing down your goals makes them much more likely to happen. These goals, they can be personal or they can be business related. I think with this, we’re talking about business related, but always remember you’re not completely separated from your business. Your business is partially you, so make goals that work for your business and that are important for you on a personal level.
4. Use your planner for financials
You want to use it for absolutely everything.
I’m sure you have your own software that you use for your main financial stuff but finances are part of your daily business. How many times have you been in a big hurry, or your just not close to your software, it’s not accessible, it’s not practical to use it, but you have something that comes up and you want to remember it. This is where you put it in your planner so eventually you can action it.
5. Prioritize your work
Now guys, this isn’t a simple as it sounds. What I mean by that is, you’re gonna schedule time to work in your business, but then there’s times that you’re going to really focus and work on your business. There’s a difference. This comes down to what we spoke about previously, with income producing activities. You can put a lot of things in your planner, but what are the ones that are really gonna move you forward? You need to have a way of distinguishing these and marking them as income producing activities, where you really focus and you can really move forward by focusing on things that are the actual priority.
6. Schedule personal time
This is an important one. You have to take care of yourself guys. You are the one that’s steering the ship, you’re the driving force behind your business, so you need to stay healthy.
There’s a lot of people that work so hard that they get burnt out. They loose motivation or start suffering from depression. You need to get rid of that. You need to take care of yourself by putting time in your calendar so you can rest, or you can exercise, do whatever hobbies you have, and spend time with your family.
You’re an entrepreneur but you’re also a person that has a family, that has friends and you need to see them. You need to interact with other people and you need to spend time doing things that you enjoy. Otherwise, what’s the point?
7. Have a motivation section
A planner is to put all your business stuff in but everybody has bad days, and when you do it’s really helpful to have something that can help you out.
Why not create a section where you can put your favourite quotes. Instead of having to go surf around and find something to uplift yourself, you can have it already in there. Things that really fire you up. Whenever you’re having a bad day or even just an unproductive day, flip to that section and get the motivation you need right then and there!
Let’s sum this all up
Entrepreneurs are busy. You don’t want to forget things, so you need somewhere to put them. You need a way to remind yourself, and that’s what a planner is.
When I was younger I didn’t have a way of keeping track of things. I use to be a mess. I had a pretty good memory but things would always slip through the cracks. Then I started making notes and I started making checklists and eventually it evolved into having a system I utilise.
This is essential as you grow in your entrepreneurial journey. You have to have something so you look and work like a professional. You can’t be missing things, you can’t be missing appointments, it doesn’t look good. So make sure that you take care of that by being a hundred percent on top of it with a planner or planning system designed for you.
When you first start using a planner, it’s gonna be awkward. That’s why it’s important to find something that works best with your personality. You want to minimise that friction. I really don’t believe there is a list of best planners for Network Marketing, as it’s individual preference. As long as it feels natural and is effective, you have a winner.
I couldn’t imagine working without a planner now, it really does take all the stress out of my life.
I remember sitting there thinking “What am I missing? What am I supposed to be doing right now? These days my phone tells me!
